1. Razor Power Core E90 Electric Scooter for kids

The Razor Power Core E90 is an electric scooter specifically designed for kids that comes at a reasonable price. It supports a maximum load of 120 lbs. The scooter’s main color is black with a green or pink finish.

Portability

The electric scooter is very lightweight (only 21.75 lbs). It’s very important for a scooter for kids to be lightweight since kids must be able to carry it by their own. This is not a foldable model, but its measures (31.7’’ x 12.9’’ x 32.9’’) and allows the scooter to be carried and stored easily.

Construction

The Power Core E90’s frame is made from powder-coated steel which gives strength and sturdiness to the scooter’s structure.

Performance

The scooter’s 12 V 90-watt hub motor allows a top speed of 10 mph. To turn on the motor, kids need to kickstart it. Once the scooter is running, it’ll easily reach the top speed of 10 mph. If we compare this scooter with adults’ ones, this is a lot less powerful. But this isn’t a lack of quality: Razor wanted to keep the motor’s power and the scooter’s top speed low to ensure kids’ safety.
The Razor Power Core E90 features a double braking system. Two different brakes can be operated: the first, on the front wheel, can be operated with the brake lever on the handlebar. It’s very easy for kids to use this brake since it works just like a traditional bike’s handbrake. The second brake is on the rear wheel and kids can operate it with their foot.
The two 12V rechargeable batteries allow a run time of 80 minutes. This is one of the longest battery-life for kids electric scooters. Such a long battery life and a top speed of 10 mph make the Razor Power Core E90 one of the best electric scooters for kids in 2020.

3. Razor Pocket Mod Miniature Euro Electric Scooter

The Razor Pocket Mod Miniature Euro features a unique Italian-style design. Designed for ages 13 and up (with a maximum load of 170 lbs), it’s available in purple, red, pink, black and white color options.

Portability

The scooter is a bit heavy: about 60 pounds. It’s definitely too much for a kid to lift, and adults can have a hard time too carrying it up the stairs. On the other hand, the miniature e-scooter isn’t meant to be lifted and carried, you can move it as you move normal-scale scooters.

Construction

The e-scooter’s frame is made from steel. It ensures the scooter sturdiness and durability. Also, such a heavy body allows the electric scooter to be very steady and balanced while the kid is riding it.

Performance

Like traditional motorcycles, the Razor Pocket Mod Miniature E-Scooter features a twist-grip acceleration control. With their left hand, children can also operate the rear brake. This e-scooter definitely looks and works as a miniature scooter (it also has under-seat storage!).

4. Razor E300S Seated Electric Scooter

The Razor E300S is one of the best electric scooters for kids in 2020. It comes with a seat (a model without the seat is also available) and is aimed at pre-teenagers (8-14-year-old children). Its colorful design is available in pink, grey and white color options.

Portability

The E300S Electric Scooter is a bit heavy for being a scooter specifically designed for kids: it weighs 52 lbs. On the other hand, a little bit of added weight brings added stability to the scooter. The scooter’s dimensions (41’’ x 17’’ x 42’’) are suitable for children up to 14 years old.

Construction

The Razor E300S’ frame and handlebar are entirely made from steel to ensure sturdiness, stability, and durability. The seat post and padded seat can be removed to allow stand-up riding.

Performance

The Razor E300S Seated Electric Scooter can reach a speed of 15 mph, even though the top speed would depend on several factors like the type of terrain and the rider’s weight. A top speed of 15 mph is quite fast for a scooter aimed at kids so the Razor E300S can ensure a lot of fun even when kids ride on the grass or up small hills.

Despite the speed, it is still a safe device with its sturdy frame and wide deck. The brake system is also very efficient with a single brake that can be operated with a lever on the left-hand grip.

5. Swagtron Swagger 8 Folding Electric Scooter for Kids & Teens

Swagtron Swagger 8 is very lightweight but, still, it can hold riders up to 150 pounds. It’s suitable for both kids and teenagers and it’s available in two color options: black and blue or black and grey. The great advantage that this model can offer is that it features a foldable design. Some foldable designs are still uncomfortable to carry around because they are heavy, and you simply struggle too much when you need to lift it. This model, instead, is very lightweight: not only you won’t have any difficulties lifting it, but your kids will be able to carry their scooter as well.

Portability

This is a foldable model. Being very lightweight (only 17.5 pounds) electric scooter, it’s easy for kids to fold it and carry it with them when they can’t ride it. When folded, the scooter can be stored almost anywhere.

Construction

Swagger 8’s frame is made from aluminum which makes the structure lightweight but strong.

Performance

The Swagtron Swagger 8 needs to be kick-started which means that the kid has to kick off like a traditional scooter to start riding.

The 200-watt motor supports a maximum speed of 15 mph which is one of the fastest electric scooter for Kids and Teens. This model doesn’t feature any hand-operated brake. The brake system is just like that of traditional non-electric scooter: you can operate it with your foot on the rear wheel. In any case, the overall performance of the Swagtron Swagger 8 is quite smooth thanks to the front and rear suspensions.

The 24V 4.0 Ah Li-ion battery allows for a mile-range of about 10 miles.

Features

  • 200-watt motor
  • Mile-range: 10 miles
  • Top Speed: 15 mph
  • Aluminum frame
  • Weight: 17 pounds
  • Max load: 150 pounds
  • Single foot-operated brake
  • Front and rear suspensions
  • Foldable

6. VIRO Rides Vega 2-in-1 Transforming Electric Scooter & Mini Bike

The VIRO Rides Vega can be very versatile: it can be ridden as an electric scooter (in the standing position) but it can become an electric minibike that can be ridden in the sitting position. Thanks to a simple mechanism, the deck can be lifted and transformed in a seat.  It is specifically designed for children since it can hold up to 120 pounds and a few color options are available.

Portability

The VIRO Rides Vega is a bit heavy (19.7 lbs). It can be hard for kids to carry it around when not riding it.

Construction

The scooter feels very sturdy and stable while riding. Changing from scooter to mini bike set up isn’t that smooth but, on the other hand, you can be sure that the deck and handlebar won’t go anywhere while your kid is riding the scooter/minibike.

Performance

This scooter can reach a top speed of 10 mph. It isn’t the fastest e-scooter on this list, but 10 mph is enough to ensure fun and safety at the same time.

The brake system is high quality: the VIRO Rides Vega features a disc brake that can be operated through the brake lever on the left handgrip. It provides excellent control while riding and it allows a prompt and safe stop of the scooter.

The VIRO Rides Vega 2-in-1 is powered by 2x12V lead-acid batteries. Unfortunately, these batteries don’t allow an impressive mile-range: only 6 miles of travel on a full charge. Despite the short battery life, thanks to its versatility we think that the Rides Vega by VIRO must be included in the list of the best electric scooter for kids in 2020.

You can read a more detailed blog post about 2 in 1 VIRO Rides Vega – here.

7. Razor E100 Electric Scooter

The E100 by Razor is a small electric scooter (8’’ x 43.5’’ x 17’’) specifically made for younger kids. It is suitable for 8 to 10-year-old children. It is available in green, pink, blue and black color options.

Portability

The VIRO Rides Vega is a bit heavy (19.7 lbs). It can be hard for kids to carry it around when not riding it.

Construction

The Razor E100 features a small and bulky structure. It feels very solid and stable while riding. The deck is extra-wide for improved comfort and balance.

Performance

The E100’s 100-watt chains driven motor supports a top speed of 10 mph. We think that this speed is ideal for kids scooters since it allows them to have fun but it never puts them in danger. To engage the motor, the kid needs to kick-start the scooter. Then, they’ll be able to reach top speed using the twist grip accelerator that needs to be held in place to maintain speed. When they want to slow down, kids can release the acceleration control and use the brake.
The Razor E100 features a caliper brake o the front wheel that can be activated by the brake lever on the handlebar.
The battery (2 x 12V sealed-lead-acid battery) provides up to 40 minutes of continuous use. Like pretty much any other scooter in this list, it takes a while to fully recharge the battery (about 12 hours). This can be a bit annoying but it’s a feature shared by most of the electric scooters aimed at kids.

Features

  • Dimensions: 8’’ x 43.5’’ x 17’’
  • Top speed: 10 mph
  • Battery Life: 40 minutes
  • Battery: 2 x 12V sealed-lead-acid-battery

Electric Scooters for kids, buying guide for parents

Are electric scooters safe for kids?

Even before they start considering which electric scooter is the best for their kids, many parents often ask whether or not e-scooters are safe for their children.

Not every electric scooters is safe for children: e-scooters designed for adults, for example, are too fast, too big to handle for a kid, and too heavy. But electric scooters that are specifically designed for children are 100% safe for your kids. In any case, though, both you and your kid can pay a little attention to some safety tips that can help prevent injuries or any bad experience.

1.Buy the right electric scooter for kid

When buying an electric scooter for your kid, you should pick the right e-scooter for him or her. Consider his/her age and weight and be sure to pick a scooter that can hold their weight and that features a size that would allow them to easily reach the handgrip, throttle, and brake. Also, consider your child’s age and pick a scooter at a reasonable speed. Kids electric scooter usually don’t go faster than 15 mph, but this can be too much if your child is particularly young or this is his or her very first electric scooter and the child is inexperienced.

In short terms: pick an electric scooter that features a proper size, max load, and top speed.

2.Always wear protective gear

When kids ride their bike they usually wear helmets and other protective gear. Riding an e-scooter is neither safer nor more dangerous than riding a bike. So teach your child to wear the same protective gear that she or he is used to wearing when he/she goes out with his/her bike.

3.Don’t buddy up

Electric scooters have a maximum load. They can’t carry more weight than the amount the manufacturer states. Kids must not stand together on the same electric scooter or it will become a dangerous game for them.

4. Learn to ride properly

Especially if your child is riding his or her first electric scooter, he/she’ll need some time to learn how to do it properly and how to feel safe on it. It may take some time before he or she can start riding around the neighborhood or commute to school, but this time would be extremely important to them.

5.Do regular safety checks on your kid’s scooter

Every once in a while you should check your child’s electric scooter and make sure that everything is in order and working. Things you want to check are tire pressure, battery charge, chain tension, and brake efficiency.

Things to consider before buying an electric scooter for your kid

1.Balance and control

Electric scooters are very simple to ride but they require some basic balance. If your child is able to ride a bike or a classic kick scooter, then they’ll most probably be able to ride a two-wheel scooter. It’s very important that they feel comfortable and balanced when they’re riding: if they feel less confident they could be dangerous for themselves and other kids around them as well. Feeling confident in their scooter would give them a better chance to have full control of their speed, changes of direction, and other road users. If your kid is so young that he or she isn’t still able to ride a bike or a skateboard, then you may need to spend some time teaching them balance and other useful tips.

2.The ideal weight of the electric scooter for your kid, and doesn’t it need to fold?

Electric scooters come at different weights. Their weight depends on the materials that are used, the number of batteries, the type of motor and a few other factors. Heavier scooters are a little more stable while riding, but, if an adult would prefer a heavy scooter, this might not be the best choice for your kid. He or she, in fact, must be able to keep the handlebar in an upright position otherwise they won’t be able to ride their electric scooter. Also, if they struggle too much to keep the scooter standing, their riding wouldn’t be 100% safe.

When you consider the electric scooter’s weight, there is also another feature you want to check before making your purchase: some models are foldable, others are not. The choice between a foldable or not-foldable model is up to you and your kids, but if you opt for a foldable one, make sure that the electric scooter is lightweight enough to be easily lifted and carried around. When an electric scooter isn’t foldable is not a big problem in case of kids-sized scooter: they are usually small enough to fit your car trunk and can easily be stored at home.

3.Battery and Max Range of my kid’s electric scooter

When it comes to the battery, you don’t have to only consider the battery life span. Mile-range is definitely important when you pick the electric scooter for your kid – it will determine how many miles/time he or she would be able to play outside, or – if they commute to school – it would determine whether or not they’d be able to go and come back from school. The second thing you should consider is the charging time. Most electric scooters for kids need to be plugged for 10-12 hours. Also, most manufacturers recommend not to let the e-scooter plugged when it is fully charged.

The average battery life for electric scooter aimed to children is about 40 minutes, but keep in mind that it would also depend on how the kid would use the scooter: how fast he/she goes, how much he/she weighs, the type of terrain, and more…

Whatever model or brand you’ll pick for your child, electric scooters are one of the best ways for children to play outside and ride around. Electric scooters are sustainable and eco-friendly, they encourage children to spend time outside and they improve their balance skills. It is also an opportunity for them to learn at a very young age a little bit of road rules!
