Everyone loves to ride at high speed and this is why top-speed is often considered as the most important feature when it comes to purchasing our new electric scooter. We don’t have to forget that one of the most annoying things when it comes to electric scooters is having to charge them for hours and then riding them just for a few miles.

Can you imagine? Arriving at work with your e-scooter and then having to walk home with your folded electric scooter on your shoulders because its battery has died. And don’t forget that any scooter needs a powerful battery to maintain that impressive top-speed you crave so much for.

In short terms, mileage and battery life shouldn’t be underestimated when considering an electric scooter. Along with speed and brake efficiency, mile-range is in my opinion among the most important features for any electric scooter. If we consider electric scooters as an alternative way to move around the city, commute to work or school, and a means of transport to all intents. If we want to use them as alternatives to our cars or legs, they necessarily have to be long-range electric scooters.

The market of electric scooters is very wide, and we thought in this article of summing up what are the best long-range electric scooters.

Best Long-range Electric scooters

1. Segway Ninebot ES4 Electric Scooter

If you want a powerful, quality-built electric scooters that can run for a long time, you won’t be disappointed by the Segway Ninebot ES4.

Let’s start from the reason this electric scooter is included in this list: it features a mile-range of up 28 miles. Always keeping in mind that mileage depends a lot on several riding conditions (rider’s weight and speed, for example), 28 miles is almost twice the mileage that most mid-range electric scooters on the market allow. This is made possible by several factors:

  • a powerful dual battery system (internal battery + a removable external battery).
  • a lightweight frame (30.9 lbs); just like the rider’s weight can affect the mileage, a heavy frame make the electric scooter run for shorter distances.
  • moderate speed. The nominal top-speed for the Segway Ninebot ES4 is 18.6 mph. It’s not a staggering speed, which allows the electric scooter to run for longer distances – yet, there are slower electric scooters in the market, so don’t think you are going to get bored on this electric scooter.

Long mile-range isn’t the only feature that makes the Segway Ninebot ES4 interesting. It features solid non-pneumatic 8’’ tires (far more durable than pneumatic ones), double suspensions to compensate for the rigidity that non-pneumatic tires would provide otherwise, double brake system (an electric brake and a mechanical rear foot brake work together to provide the safest and quickest stop whenever needed), front LED lights, and water-resistant foldable frame.

How can you make your electric scooter battery last longer?

Since battery depends on several factors we can pay attention to those factors and make our battery last longer. There are many tips about how to make your long-range electric scooter’s battery last even longer.

  1.  An effective way of prolonging your battery life is to avoid letting it drain before charging it. When you see your battery at 15-20%, don’t wait any longer and plug it to the charger. Always avoid leaving the battery unloaded for a long time because it would shorten its life.
  2.  For the same reason, when storing your e-scooter for a long time, make sure to fully charge it. It is also recommended that you charge it every 30 days or so.
  3.  After a long ride, wait at least 30 minutes before charging your electric scooter – let the battery cool down.
  4.  Just like it is for our smartphone, it’s advisable to always charge our electric scooters with the original charging cable. Using a different and cheaper one would charge the battery more slowly affecting its life span.
  5.  Negative environmental conditions can damage the battery. Mainly, batteries must be kept dry and cool. Overheating reduces longevity and efficiency (so the battery isn’t able to guarantee the same performances). Store your electric scooter in a cool environment and never leave it under the sun for hours. Also, extreme cold should be avoided. Humidity damages batteries as well, so store your e-scooter in a dry environment. Check if your electric scooter is waterproof – if it is not, avoid riding under the rain, avoid puddles and never leave it outside when you’re not using it: if the batteries get wet your risk to have it to throw it away.

Factors that affect the range of an electric scooter

We talked many times about how the mile-range of any electric scooter depends on some factors, and that we shouldn’t expect that nominal mileage we see in the product descriptions to be the actual mileage. Let’s see now in the details what are the factors that can affect mileage.

1. Rider’s weight and load

It’s common sense that carrying a heavier person (or load in general) requires more energy than a more lightweight one. Nominal mileage usually referred to tests made with a rider of 75kg. Most male adults are heavier than this – if this is your case expect your mileage to be shorter. Also, carrying backpacks on any type of overload on your electric scooter would decrease the mile-range as well.

There is not much you can do to improve your mileage here, but you can pay attention to maximum load and power when purchasing your electric scooter. If you are a heavy person, searching for one of the best long-range electric scooters, or if you know you are going to load your electric scooter with some extra weight, opt for an electric scooter with extremely long mileage, powerful motor, and excellent maximum load.

2. Tire pressure

Under-inflated tires result in reduced fuel economy even in cars. The simple explanation for this is that under-inflated tires deform the wheel from its optimal and most efficient shape. For example, an increased contact surface between the wheel and the ground results in increased friction which will require more energy from the electric scooter’s battery. You must always check your tire pressure when first riding your new electric scooter and then periodically. If you purchase an electric scooter with non-pneumatic tires, of course, you will avoid the problem.

It’s important to let you know that avoiding insufficient pressure doesn’t mean you can over-pressurize your tires. This would lead to some other issues that you want to avoid as well. The optimal tire pressure is indicated in the electric scooter manual.

3. Slope of the terrain

Riding uphill will consume a lot more battery than riding on flat terrain. Even when the slope is gentle, the energy required to keep the speed constant or accelerate would be increased. Think of riding a bike: riding uphill requires lots of energy.

Always keep in mind that nominal mileages the ones we see indicated in product descriptions are calculated on flat terrains (other than other ideal conditions).

There is not much you can do lengthen your mileage in this case, but keep in mind that choosing a longer route that lets you avoid the slope you will end up positive on the range in most of cases.

4. Riding style

Putting your electric scooter into motion requires energy. Accelerating it requires energy. In electric scooters that feature electric brakes, even braking requires energy. In these terms your riding style can affect your mileage: the more you brake and accelerate the less your battery will last.

People that have a smoother riding style, who tend to ride at a constant speed, would ride longer that riders with a more aggressive style.

5. Temperature

Overheating can damage the battery and affect its performance. A damaged battery would, of course, result in a shorter mileage. We can’t control the temperature of the environment we are riding in, but we can and we should pay attention to the temperature of the environment where we store our electric scooter.

The ideal temperature for a battery is more or less the same as the ideal temperature for people so, if 20°C is the ideal temperature, 30°C is still acceptable. This range offers the best battery capacity. Higher temperatures would shorten both the battery life span and longevity (in terms of total charge cycles). Always avoid leaving your e-scooter under the sun, in your car, or in any hot environment.

Coclusion

Now that you have a list of the best long-range electric scooters and all the information you need to enhance your battery’s life span and longevity and your electric scooter’s mileage, you are ready to purchase your next long-range electric scooter. Best of luck!
