Quality and Design of Segway Ninebot E22 Electric Scooter :

The Segway Ninebot E22 E45 has a simple and elegant slim design. The main colors, black and grey, are matt, and the shapes very harmonious. One of the most noticeable features is the slim and thin deck, especially when compared to other entry-level electric scooters.

The design is also foldable and the weight reasonable: the E22 only weighs 28 lbs. Having a foldable but heavy electric scooter is almost useless; the whole point of being able to fold it is being able to also lift and carry it. With this electric scooter, this is easily possible. Whether there are stairs on your road to work, whether you use your electric scooter to commute to the train station, or you want to store it in your car trunk and go riding at the park, with the Ninebot E22 you can easily do all of those things.

Despite its lightweight, this electric scooter is highly resistant: it can carry loads up to 220 lbs, which makes it suitable even for heavier riders.

Handlebars

The Ninebot E22 by Segway has a straight handlebar with grey rubberized handgrips. The design looks very simple and clean because of the absence of the brake levers. At the exact center of the handlebar, you can find a convenient display that shows important information such as speed, speed mode, and battery lifespan. However, the E22 has also its own app through which you can read the information regarding the electric scooter and the riding as well.

The throttle and brake are two buttons located on each side of the handlebar; you can easily operate them with your thumbs without loosening the grip on the handgrips. Furthermore, the Ninebot E22 comes with a bell. This is pretty rare for electric scooters and tells us that this model has been specifically designed for the city. A bell is an important safety feature that allows you to signal your presence on the road, even to pedestrians.

Lights

The Ninebot E22 by Segway has both tail and headlights. The tail light is red and helps signal your presence on the road, especially with poor light conditions. However, if you’re riding at night you may want to signal your presence more efficiently, for example wearing a high-visibility jacket.

The headlight is white and directed low with the main purpose of illuminating the ground and the road ahead to improve your visibility while also contributing to signaling your presence.

Brakes

The E22 features a double brake system: an E-ABS electric brake plus a traditional rear fender brake. This simple braking system is actually very efficient and it’s proportioned to the electric scooter’s speed. As the top speed is 20 mph, this type of brakes is more than enough to guarantee a short braking distance, comfort braking, and safety.

If you are a beginner, you may be used to the rear fender brake, since it’s usually mounted on traditional non-electric scooters, but not to the electric brake button. People are usually more used to brake levers since they are found on bicycles, however, it takes a very short time to get used to the brake button.

Tires

The Ninebot E22 mounts solid 9’’ tires. Solid tires have their pros and cons. While they do not require maintenance and are less subject to wear and damage than pneumatics ones, they are also more rigid and provide a less comfortable riding. Solid tires are also cheaper, and that’s why we found them in most entry-level electric scooters including the Ninebot E22.

They are very resistant and durable, but they show the limits of solid tires: the riding is a bit rigid (with pneumatic tires shocks and bumps are absorbed while with solid tires they are more annoying) and you can ride on rough terrains. However, this type of tire was exactly what we’d expect from an electric scooter for this price range.

Kickstand

This electric scooter features a small but sturdy retractable kickstand. The E22 can be folded quickly and easily, however you may want to use your kickstand sometimes and Segway did a great job providing their Ninebot E22 with it. Even if you don’t want to leave your electric scooter unattended outside of the grocery store while you do some shopping, the kickstand is convenient for other situations as well: for example, during the charging.

Deck

As we’ve mentioned, one of the features that make this electric scooter different by its competitors is the thin deck. This is possible because the battery is located in the tube stem instead of inside the deck (as it happens for most electric scooters) and has the main advantage: the deck is more distant from the ground and this gives higher agility to the electric scooter and prevents the damages.

Assembly

The Segway Ninebot E22 E45 requires some simple assembling. When you pull it out of its box, you find it folded. Unfold it, lock the stem in its position, and secure it. Then, you’ll need to attach the handlebar: insert one pin into it and tighten the six screws with the wrench that is included in the package. The tires are already mounted and they don’t require any main entrance or checks. Once you’ve charged it, you’re ready to go with your new Ninebot E22 electric scooter!

Performance for Segway Ninebot E22

With its 300W brushless direct current motor, the E22 can reach a top speed of 12.4 mph. This might not seem an impressive speed – and it is not – it is, however, the ideal speed you can maintain while you’re riding on the road next to other vehicles, pedestrians, and road users. It is also what you’d expect from an electric scooter that comes at such an affordable price.
We’ve mentioned that the feeling while riding the E22 can be a little rigid, even though the tire shock absorption system absorbs some of the smallest bumps; however, it is nothing that annoying on flat and smooth terrains. The electric scooter can also climb small hills with ease (up to 15% hill grade): the electric scooter would slow down but you need to jump off and push it, which is always appreciated.

Three riding modes are available on the Ninebot E22:
● Cruise Mode: the slowest, it limits the speed so that you can have a longer battery life span and mileage;
● Normal Mode: you can ride at an average speed, to be safe on the city road and optimize the battery life span;
● Sports Modes: you can ride at 12 mph, which is the top speed for the Ninebot E22

For an electric scooter that has a top speed 12 mph, three-speed modes are not that useful. They don’t bother, but you won’t use them. Most of the time you’ll be riding at top speed, which is an average speed anyway, and when you need to lengthen the battery life as much as you can you are going to set the Cruise Mode. The Normal Mode is quite useless.

Battery life and charging time

The battery quality is probably this electric scooter’s main forte. First of all, mileage: with the E22 you can ride for 13.7 miles on a single charge. If this doesn’t seem that impressive for you, remember that this is a very affordable electric scooter and that there’s more. The battery located on the stem had some advantages, the main of which is the possibility of attaching a second battery so that you can double the mileage. Also, the additional battery would provide some extra power that will improve the electric scooter overall performance, including enhancing its speed: with the second battery attached the top speed can pass from 12 mph to 15/18 mph depending on riding conditions.

There’s more: the Ninebot E22 can be fully charged (from empty) in 3.5 hours. For those of you who don’t know, electric scooters for this price range often feature charging times of 6 up to 10 hours! An electric scooter that can be charged quickly offers tons of advantages: if you need to ride for a long distance to go to work, you can even drain your electric scooter’s battery on the outward trip. You could simply charge the device during your shift and be ready to go home with a 100% battery at the end of it.

Why we like about Segway Ninebot E22 Electric Scooter:

Design
This is one of the most elegant and compact electric scooters on the market. When folded, it occupies very little space. It’s easily maneuverable thanks to its light weight, and – when unfolded – it has a unique simple and elegant design.
Affordable
This isn’t just an affordable electric scooter, it’s a real value for money. When compared to other models for the same price range, this is one of the best for design, built-quality, and performance
Battery
The battery is what we were most impressed with, especially considering the E22’s price. Fast-charging, good mileage with the possibility of attaching a second battery and doubling it: this is a feature that enhances the possibilities of this entry-level electric scooter.

What we didn't like about Dualtron Segway Ninebot E22:

  • Rigidity

The solid 9’’ tires provide a rigid riding experience. The tire shock absorption system isn’t enough to compensate for the rigidity of the solid tires. However, for an electric scooter of this price range, this is totally acceptable. Plus, for those who want an electric scooter to commute on city roads, this won’t be a big problem

  • Useless Speed Modes

The three Speed Modes available on the E22 are quite a useless additional feature. The slowest mode – which is called Cruise Mode – could be useful in situations of emergency, when you need to save as much battery as you can (but it is very slow!). This is a slow electric scooter, other than lengthening the battery, there are no other reasons for limiting the speed even further.

Conclusion

Those who are at their first experience with an electric scooter, or those who are searching for an affordable option, may find in the Segway Ninebot E22 exactly what they were looking for. The features of speed and performance are in line with what we’d expect for this price range, but the quality built, design and battery compartment are above expectations. Safe, fun, and cheap: the Ninebot E22 is one of the best entry-level electric scooters available today.
