The Segway ES line is known for superior quality scooters that come with great battery life and range. Since the ES1 version has come out, the company has strived to provide faster speed and better batteries with each new model. The Segway Ninebot ES4 Electric Scooter (2019 Version) is the latest creation by the company, and it combines all the best modifications and upgrades to provide you with amazing riding experience. Sounds impressive, right? If you want a powerful scooter that runs for a long time, this scooter may be the one for you. Want to see how it works? Let’s take a closer look

General Specs of Segway Ninebot ES4:

Quality and design of Segway Ninebot ES4

The Segway ES4 is a foldable scooter and it has mostly been carved out of metal with some plastic parts. The scooter has a monochrome grey finish and it looks premium and elegant, and it has a practical design. It weighs 30.9 lbs. so it is a little hefty, but you can still carry it around for short distances.

- Foldable design

The scooter can be collapsed by an easy folding mechanism, and you can conveniently store it in public transport, your office or home. It will even fit in the trunk of your car, so that really helps when you go on a vacation or trips.

- Wheels

The front wheels are 8-inch solid rubber tires, and the back wheels are 7.5-inch. The tires are nice and sturdy, but they limit the scooter to roads and sideways because the scooter loses a lot of speed if you run it on grass or sand. This may be a problem for some people because they would have to avoid grass patches, puddles and sand in order to keep the scooter moving.

The front and the back of the scooter have a double-spring suspension system built in so you can have a smooth ride if you ever cross a bump or rough terrain.

- Controls

The handlebars contain a throttle, brakes, LED panel and headlights.

The scooter employees both a mechanical brake and an electronic brake for maximum security, and when you are traveling at 12.4 mph it has a stopping distance of just 13 feet which is quite impressive. These brakes will make the scooter come to a halt instantly even when you are going uphill.

The LED panel shows you important stats about the scooter like battery levels, speed and riding mode, and you have a power button that can turn the scooter on and change the speed mode.

The headlights and rear brake lights are bright and they make it safer to travel at night by improving visibility.

- App

The scooter has an app that you can connect with through Bluetooth to access a myriad of features including cruise control, security alarm, and updates. You can even control the headlights and the color of the ambient lights on the scooter

Asembly

Segway has kept the assembly process rather simple so that anyone can assemble the scooter even if you don’t have experience with mechanics. You would need to spare 10 minutes for the assembly process, and an Allen wrench that has been included in the box. To assemble the scooter, align the handles with the stem of the scooter to make sure it is straight, and then tighten the bolts with the Allen wrench. Make sure that all the joints are nice and tight before riding the scooter.

Performance for Segway Ninebot ES4

This is a powerful scooter, and the motor has a maximum capacity of 800 W. The impressive motor combined with the excellent batteries makes Segway Ninebot ES4 a powerhouse. You can choose between three riding modes, standard, sports and limited. The limited mode helps preserve battery by limiting the speed to 10mph. The standard mode will bring the speed up to 17 mph. But if you want to unleash the full capacity of this beast, turn on speed mode and enjoy cruising through the city with a speed as high as 18.6 mph. You can even climb hills as this scooter can support inclines of up to 15 degrees.

You have the option of turning on cruise mode from the app, which will keep the scooter running at a steady 12 mph and you won’t have to constantly worry about the throttle.

Battery

The Segway Ninebot ES4 Electric Scooter 2019 version has a fantastic dual battery system that puts it above and beyond the older models by essentially doubling the run time. It has an integrated internal battery and a removable external battery that is attached to the stem of the scooter. The batteries take about 7 hours to charge from 0 to 100. The power of the two batteries combine to make this scooter run for a long time on a single charge, and you can cover a distance of up to 28 miles. This extended range means that you can ride for a long time and even then, you most probably you won’t need to charge the scooter daily. If you have a long commute, you won’t have to worry about the battery running out in the middle of the road.

The external battery is removable and you can detach it if you don’t want the additional bulk or it gets uncomfortable to carry the scooter because of it. However, in doing so you would cut down the range of the scooter to half of the original. The battery stats can be viewed from the display panel on the scooter and from the accompanying app.

What we liked about Segway Ninebot ES4

  • The scooter can run for 28 miles on a single charge, thanks to the external battery
  • You can choose between 3-speed modes, sports, standard and limited depending upon your needs
  • The maximum speed is phenomenal, at approximately 19 mph
  • The floorboard has a mesh pattern for optimal grip so there is a reduced risk of falling
  • The handlebars are comfort and anti-slip to prevent any accidents
  • The cruise control can easily be turned on from the app and it allows you to maintain speed without constantly holding the throttle
  • The scooter has a solid build and the sleek grey finish looks very elegant

What we didn't like about Segway Ninebot ES4

  • Limited color options
  • The scooter costs substantially more than the previous models
  • Due to the rubber tires, the scooter can’t run smoothly on grass or dirt, and it is only suited for flat surfaces
  • The scooter doesn’t do a great job of absorbing shocks and bolts, and the suspension system could be upgraded
  • You cannot remove the external battery without an Allen wrench, and the external battery makes it difficult to balance the scooter when you are carrying it in hand
  • The scooter weighs 30 pounds and it is difficult to carry for a long distance.

Conclusion

The Segway Ninebot ES4 Electric Scooter is a fantastic scooter and it delivers its promise of fast speed and phenomenal battery life. It is perfect for long and short commutes, and thanks to the external battery, you won’t be reaching for the charger very often. The app is great and well-designed and helps extend your control over the scooter by offering a wide range of functions, including cruise control, anti-theft, and alarm.

The scooter is probably not suited to you if you regularly travel over uneven surfaces like pavements or grass. The hefty weight makes it difficult to carry it with you up and down public transport, so if you were planning to use it between bus stops, get ready for some heavy lifting. And then there is the issue of the price, which will put a dent in your pocket. However, if you are willing to spend the big bucks, you will get a modern and fast scooter that won’t disappoint.
